For the third time in as many years, the softball team has a new coach going into the season. The athletic department named Lacy Gillotti the new head softball coach over winter break. The former Wellesley College assistant becomes the fifth coach in the program’s history.
“I’m really looking forward to a successful season,” said Gillotti. The head coach has incorporated her work as the strength and conditioning director at Wellesley College into the practices, something junior catcher Denise Archetto sees as a huge asset for the team.
“It’s a combination of conditioning and softball,” said Archetto. The Cranston, RI native said the preseason practices have featured a mix of traditional softball drills and physical training routines, which have been effective in preparing the team. “It’s definitely a change…that I’m looking forward to.”
“We focus a lot on increasing our overall fitness level,” said Gillotti. “Softball is a very explosive sport, so we do a lot of explosive movements [during practices].”
Gillotti earned her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Fitchburg State University before earning her Master’s in Physical Education at Springfield College.
Although coach focuses the practices on physical training, Gillotti believes chemistry is second to none. “I think everything is built off of team chemistry,” said Gillotti. “I was really lucky to inherit a group of women who are very cohesive and really have a good team dynamic.”
“We are very excited to have Coach Gillotti join our coaching staff,” said Athletic Director Kristy Walter. “Her background and experience make her a great fit for Lasell College and I am looking forward to having her work with our young women building a strong softball program.”
“Besides coming to the program my freshman year, this is the season I’m most looking forward to,” said Archetto.
The team’s first home game takes place on Tuesday, March 25 against Lesley University.
