BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Mike Hansen (Rochester, N.Y.) hit .429 with four kills, as the No. 13 Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team defeated Newbury 3-0 in non-conference action Saturday night at Tansey Gymnasium.
Wentworth wins its fifth straight against the Nighthawks to improve to 14-4, while Newbury now stands at 6-8.
The Leopards opened up with four straight points to start an 8-2 run. Newbury came within four after freshman Michael Holihan (Northampton, Pa.) recorded a kill. A Wentworth timeout cooled down the Nighthawk run and the Leopards gained back control of the set. Wentworth captured the first set 25-17 after hitting .333 as a team.
Another 8-2 run was thrown together by the Leopards to make the score 13-5 in the second set. Freshman Sean Mullen’s (Longwood, Fla.) five kills helped Wentworth close out on an 8-3 run to take the set, 25-13.
Wentworth opened the third set on a 7-2 run. Sophomore Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) had three kills and two block assists in the final frame. A Newbury attack error closed out the set and match, giving Wentworth the 25-17 victory.
Mullen finished the match with eight kills, a pair of digs, and a service ace. Potts hit .750 with six kills and led with a match-high six digs while sophomore Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) had six kills as well. Sophomore Paul Cooke (Ridgefield, Conn.) had 31 assists.
Senior Danny Tinner (Salem, N.H.) and freshmen Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) and Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) all finished with seven kills for the Nighthawks.
Wentworth resumes Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Thursday night, as the Leopards host Emmanuel at 7 p.m. Newbury resumes New England Collegiate Conference play next Saturday, as they host New England Collegiate Conference foe Endicott at 11 a.m.
