BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored a game-high six goals and assisted on another while junior Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) had four goals and three assists, as Gordon topped the Wentworth Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team 17-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both team Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
With the win Gordon improves to 4-3 overall (1-0 CCC) while Wentworth suffers its first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 (0-1).
The Fighting Scots got on the board first 50 seconds into the game with a goal from Castelline. Junior Pam Mudge (Hooksett, N.H.) tied it up with her fifth goal of the season less than three minutes later. Castelline scored two more goals and senior Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.) added one of her own to put Gordon up 4-1. After sophomore Amanda Dexter (Harvard, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season, Gordon strung together five straight tallies to take a 9-2 lead going into half.
Grinnell did most of her scoring in the second half to help pull the Fighting Scots away from the Leopards as she scored four times and senior Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) added two more.
Wentworth added three goals in the second, including sophomore Molly Dufresne’s (Plaistow, N.H.) team-leading eighth of the season.
Illian had three goals on the day while sophomore Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) had two goals, two assists, and four caused turnovers. Sophomore Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) made seven saves in just over 45 minutes of action to record the win while freshman Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) made one save in 14-plus minutes of work.
Dexter had two goals for the Leopards with Mudge scoring a goal and assisting on another. Senior Jessica Houghton (Billerica, Mass.) had five draw controls, Junior Hayley Patton (Cranston, R.I.) made a pair of saves in 15:45 of work. Senior Robyn Pacini (Stoneham, Mass.) made 10 stops in 44:15.
Gordon is at Salem State on Monday night while Wentworth continues CCC play on Wednesday on Wednesday evening.
